Fire Island

Rod & I hopped on a ferry over to Fire Island on Thursday night. The island is about 7 miles off the coast of Long Island & no cars are allowed. Bikes are permitted only in the off-season & on weekdays. There are boardwalks of cute little beach houses outfitted with flower boxes & Fire Island's requisite wagons (for hauling luggage, groceries, etc. to & from town to the homes). We are staying with the Altman's, Rod's dad's best friends, who have summered here for almost 40 years & who own a beautiful home in the most exclusive area of the island, Robbin's Rest. The home is two levels, with the kitchen & living room on the second floor, it has picturesque gardens, wrap-around decks, outdoor showers & beach access. It is so peaceful here without any cars, & I have finally had the chance to catch up on my reading. We are have some amazing meals, courtesy of our host, Alan Altman, & a nice visit with Rod's dad. We walked into town for some light shopping (not much, much to MY chagrin) & I snapped these photos to share (the picture of the flower pots are from the home we're staying at).
