Today Rod & I rented a car in DC & drove to Alexandria, Virginia to see George Washington's estate, Mount Vernon. The drive was picturesque with lots of greenery, picket fences & the Potomac. Mount Vernon itself was beautiful, very quaint with beautiful gardens, forest & a wharf on the river. We had rented a mid-size vehicle from Avis but they offered us an upgrade to a Ford Expedition at no extra charge. I felt like I was driving a tank the entire time; the rear of the vehicle stuck out a good 4 feet more than any other in the parking lot at Mount Vernon. On the way back into DC we decided to stop in Alexandria's quaint Old Town, filled with charming boutiques & cafes. Rod had me busting a gut when he said, "We can stop, so long as we can find an airport hangar to park this behemoth in". Tonight we are laying low in preparation for the Smithsonian tomorrow.
